All the ways to open notifications on Android
Notifications are one of the main ways your smartphone keeps you in the loop. They let you know when you have a new message, an upcoming calendar event, or when your favorite app wants to grab your attention. Whether you want to reply to a text, check a missed call, or just clear the clutter, getting to your notifications quickly is essential. And while it might seem obvious how to open them, there are actually several ways to do it. Would you like to know them all? Here they are:

What the Notifications panel looks like on different smartphones

Before I get into the different ways to open your notifications, it helps to know that the Notifications panel doesn’t look exactly the same on all Android devices. Each manufacturer customizes its appearance and behavior:
  • On Google Pixel phones, notifications appear in a clean list under the Quick Settings toggles.
  • Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI have a slightly more compact layout and use the brand’s signature design elements.
  • On Xiaomi devices with MIUI, notifications may appear in a separate panel from Quick Settings, depending on your layout settings.
  • On vivo and OPPO phones, you’ll see a more colorful, sometimes larger icon-based layout for certain alerts, which can be adjusted in the settings.

How to access notifications on Android with a swipe from the top of the screen

The most common and universal method is to place your finger at the very top edge of the screen and swipe down. This reveals your latest notifications, starting with the most recent.

How to access notifications on Android with a swipe from the Home screen

Many Android devices, including Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, also let you swipe down from anywhere on the home screen to open notifications. It’s practically the same gesture as in the previous method of this tutorial, but you don’t have to perform it from the very top of the display. For example, you can swipe down from the middle of the display, or its bottom half.

How to open notifications without unlocking your phone

You don’t always need to unlock your device to check notifications. Most Android phones show them right on the Lock screen, so all you need to do is wake your phone (by pressing the power button or using tap-to-wake) and check out what’s on the display.

How to open notifications on a Samsung with One UI 7.0 or newer

If you have a Samsung Galaxy smartphone with One UI 7 or newer, you might notice that notifications work a bit differently. Swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen opens Quick Settings, and to access your notifications, you now have to swipe down from the top-left corner or from anywhere else along the top edge (except that top-right area).

How to open notifications with the Accessibility menu

If reaching the top of the screen is tricky, Android’s Accessibility menu can make things easier. It adds a floating button that gives you quick shortcuts to some built-in functions, including the notifications panel. To enable it, open Settings and go to Accessibility.

If you own a device from another brand, like Xiaomi, vivo, or OPPO, it might be under the Accessibility menu, Accessibility features, or Accessibility tools. Now, find and activate the Accessibility Menu shortcut.
Enable the Accessibility Menu shortcut
Enable the Accessibility Menu shortcut Once enabled, tap the floating icon. In the menu that shows up on your screen, look for the Notifications option, and tap it. Note that you may need to turn the page to find it, like I did in the next screenshots.
